Windows Server 2016 can itself be a KMS activation server (KMS host) if it has a configured Volume Activation Services role, or be activated on another KMS server (there are some additional requirements).

I got an internal inquiry, though I am not convinced why they want to know the details (which server). We have a cluster of dual (active/backup) servers, where the authentication licensing is configured on the main then backup servers (WS2016). A group of users(say 10) initiated sessions via remote desktop to the cluster, but none of the servers is showing any licensing authentication (No of licenses is shown as 0 on the dashboard). But sessions/connections are up. The question is how to determine which server is providing which authentication licensing number to which user, and how to visualize that (not sure if authentication license manager can do that)? Initially 50 licenses x 4 groups (i.e. total 200 licenses) were configured on the main then backup servers. It might be confusing and difficult to understand the situation. Your observations seem to fall in line with what I did. It was still stuck at 10% at about 18 hours after I started it. I chose to let it sit as the server seemed functional, and I assumed as the drive, cpu and ram usage was a bit higher than normal that it was still doing something. before I reached the 24 hour mark it was done and was prompting me to reboot. I remember the first time I attempted to use drive compression with a multiplexed 16 bit cpu running at 16Mhz, (386sx) with 2 meg of ram and that process was fast compared to what I just witnessed. What was that thing doing? I could have rebuilt that server in that amount of time. Glad I didn't. My server has a Comcast internet connection not fast but fast enough to download install DVDs. It also has plenty of ram and drive space(raid 5), as well as two xenon CPU's. It would be nice to know what the bottle neck was and if I could have done some prep work ahead of time to not have some command windows chugging away for random period of time with no feedback to the screen (fail programming 101). I did see other threads that suggest that the real fix hear may be to get the UI activation function working. But it seems as though the command line system works but some feedback, anything would be better than two notifications in 24 hours. If anyone knows why some people see to be done in seconds, others in 2, 4 and now 24 hours, that might be helpful?
